The Lions Club of Berowra was privileged to host a Regional Final of the Lions Youth of the Year competition. Club round winners from the Lions Clubs of Balgowlah, St Ives, Ku-Ring-Gai, Chatswood Executive and Berowra competed on the night.
All competitors were competing for for the right to progress through to the next round - the District Final. Schools represented included Roseville College, Knox Grammar School, Presbyterian Ladies College and Northern Beaches Secondary College.
Before a judging panel comprising NSW RFS Commissioner, Mr Shane Fitzsimmons, Berowra Bendigo Bank Manager, Ms Josie Fonti, Hornsby Shire Council Councillor, Mr Nathan Tilbury and Westpac Bank Manger, Mr Mario Di Bernardo, the participants endured a 40 minute panel interview followed in the evening by the public speaking competition comprising impromptu questions and a 5 minute prepared speech of their own topic. To say that the level of competition was high would be an understatement.
The winner of the Public Speaking component of the competition was Mr Adam Soonius, representing Knox Grammar. Adam was presented his award by Hornsby Shire Council Mayor, The Honorable Cr Philip Ruddock. And the overall winner on the night was Miss Mari Watkins from Roseville College. Mari was presented her award by NSW RFS Commissioner, Mr Shane Fitzsimmons and will now go on to represent at the District Final. Congratulations to all participants.
